Can Mental Illness Be Behind Fascination With Aliens?

With several alien theories out there, it’s hard to ascertain if these could be following facts or just pure fantasy. However, according to scientists, these alien encounters can be attributed to the existing mental illness of the people experiencing them. With mental health becoming a buzz word nowadays, it is just as important to dig deeper as to why people are merely hooked on pointing out that aliens exist. To start, here are just some of the mental conditions connected with the fascination and experiences of alleged interaction with aliens.

As stated by John M. Grohol, Psy.D., “Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness characterized by a person experiencing a combination of delusions and hallucinations.” People who have schizophrenia have trouble separating fantasy from reality. It is as if fantasy and reality feel blended into their reality. Actually, according to scientists, schizophrenia is the result of people having fewer synapses as compared to their peers, starting during adolescence. Given this definition, there are those people who are sure that aliens are monitoring their every move. Some even went to the extreme that they have seen an entire fleet of alien spacecraft on Earth. Based on research, a lot of these claims can be in attribution to experiences and testimonies of people who have schizophrenia. The chronic fear that aliens are here on Earth has led them to spread their beliefs to other people as well.

Shared Psychosis

There’s a saying that goes like this: people can describe you by the five people you spend most of your time with often. As such, if you are not aware that you are using most of your waking time with a person who has schizophrenia or other mental conditions, most likely you are also going to adapt to their way of thinking. Even perfectly healthy people can pick up the delusions of a person who has schizophrenia. It can also be an application to the case of people with an intense fascination with aliens. People who have schizophrenia and other mental conditions can affect people around them to believe that aliens do exist. Most of the time, people who have schizophrenia have a deep emotional relationship with the people they affect. Thus, even healthy people can come up with more reasons to justify their beliefs in aliens, just because blow by blow accounts of the people who have schizophrenia influenced them.

Sleep Paralysis Some individuals who claimed to have been abducted by aliens in their sleep reported having been brought inside alien spacecraft and examined by aliens. Some also argued that the aliens spoke gibberish to them before the abduction. Many of these experiences also included the inability to wake up even if they claimed they were conscious during the abduction. However, contrary to this belief, a lot of scientists claim that these “alien abductions” are only due to sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis occurs when a person is in the process of going to sleep or waking up. “The disorder is recognized as influencing fictional and historic events,” said Rick Nauert PhD. The person won’t be able to move or speak temporarily for about a few minutes. This description that the person is unable to move or speak is strikingly similar to the claims of alien abductees. “Sleep paralysis should be assessed more regularly and uniformly in order to determine its impact on individual functioning and better articulate its relation to other psychiatric and medical conditions,” according to Dr. Brian A. Sharpless.

What Should You Do? If you believe you can relate to any of the conditions as described above, you may opt to decide to see a doctor for proper analysis. You may have to undergo several physical tests and some one-on-one interviews with a psychiatrist to make sure if you are indeed suffering from an undiagnosed mental condition. If in case you have any mental issue, do note that early detection and treatment can help you to cope with your situation in the long run. It is essential to get treatment as soon as you learn about it. As discussed, mental conditions can get severe, especially if there are other stressors such as work, family, or finances. These stressors can interfere with how your brain is wired, and you may feel that your conditions are getting worse. Also, you too affect the people closest to you with your words and strong beliefs. As in the case of fascination and the firm belief that aliens exist, even healthy people can be affected by hallucinations of people who have schizophrenia. Thus, starting on a journey towards holistic wellness begins with self-awareness. From there, you can slowly work towards getting over your episodes and delusions, if any.
